La lectura puede ser una de esas actividades lúdicas y motivadoras que hagan del aprendizaje de un segundo idioma algo atractivo y divertido para los niños. Además, los cuentos permiten a los pequeños comprender el mundo que los rodea y favorecen su desarrollo. Por ello, son muchos los que apuestan por fomentar su uso como parte fundamental en el aprendizaje natural de una lengua. Para ello, el método más extendido es la oralidad: lectura en voz alta, cuentacuentos… son técnicas en las que la entonación, el atrezo, la imagen… contribuyen a que el público entienda el mensaje y asimile nuevos conocimientos, al tiempo de se divierte.
A los pequeños les encanta escuchar historias, por lo que esta técnica es atractiva. Cuando los niños se dan cuenta de que están entendiendo una historia en otro idioma, se sienten motivados, lo que favorece que crezca su curiosidad por el nuevo idioma y las ganas de intentar hablarlo. Otro aspecto importante es la forma en la que la narración oral favorece la captación de nuevos sonidos y la entonación. Además, los pequeños van asimilando de forma inconsciente vocabulario nuevo y nuevas estructuras gramaticales. Todos estos aspectos no sólo favorecen la adquisición de una segunda lengua, sino que también mejoran la competencia lingüística en la lengua materna.
